His Majesty the late King Ali bin Hussein Al-Mu'azzam
King Ali, may God bless his soul, the eldest son of Sharif Hussein bin Ali, was born in Mecca in 1880. He accompanied his father to Istanbul and later returned to the Hejaz when his father, Sharif Hussein, became its Emir. He assisted his father in his responsibilities and acted on his behalf during his absence. When the Great Arab Revolt began, Prince Ali participated in leading its armies and forces. After Sharif Hussein was pledged allegiance as king, Prince Ali was appointed to head the first government of the state.
After the end of World War I, Fakhri Pasha, the commander of the Turkish army, surrendered to Prince Ali after being besieged by the revolutionary armies in Medina for three years. Prince Ali then entered the city, raised the Arab flag, and was appointed by his father as its Emir.
Prince Ali exerted significant effort to restore normal life in Medina and worked on rebuilding the railway line until it was repaired.
At the end of 1924, Sharif Hussein abdicated the throne, and Prince Ali was proclaimed King of the Hejaz. He then moved from Mecca to Jeddah, where he continued to fight for about a year before leaving the Hejaz at the end of 1925. He moved to Baghdad to live alongside his brother, Faisal I, and stood in for him while he was traveling.
King Ali was blessed with one son, Prince Abdul Ilah, who played an important role in the Kingdom of Iraq after the death of King Ghazi bin Faisal, and three daughters.
King Ali passed away in Baghdad in 1935.
